The Hair Transplant Timeline

The Hair Transplant Timeline, what to expect with hair transplant, hair restoration,

Hair loss doesn’t just affect older men. It may surprise you to know that hair loss can occur in men of all ages. In fact, about 25% of men experience the first signs of hair loss before the age of 21, and most men will experience some degree of hair loss or thinning.

A hair transplant can be life-changing for men who have experienced significant hair loss. If you’ve made the decision to restore your hair with this transformative procedure, you may wonder what to expect.

Learning about the recovery process gives you more control and helps you achieve realistic expectations. Here’s what you can expect from lasting, minimally-invasive solutions like SmartGraft®.

The procedure

Previous hair restoration procedures often involved a large scar and a slow, uncomfortable recovery process. With SmartGraft, Dr. Michael Sarti provides a lasting hair loss solution that looks completely natural, using revolutionary technology rather than a scalpel. Patients can return to work within one or two days following the procedure. Here’s the typical timeline.

Week 1

It’s crucial to keep your head flat the first night and day following the SmartGraft procedure. The goal is to minimize swelling.

You may notice redness and scabbing in the transplanted area during the first few days after the procedure.  Do not touch the grafts with water or your hands for one week post procedure. It’s common to experience soreness, tightness, and even numbness as well. Some patients experience swelling around the bridge of the nose, eyes, and forehead.

Weeks 2 and 3

Patients can shampoo as normal and gently washing the transplanted area. The grafts are now permanently in place, so you no longer risk dislodging them. You may notice some shedding from the transplanted area. Patients can get haircuts and treat their hair as they normally would.

Week 4

You may be surprised to know that all hair follicles go through various cycles and do not grow at the exact same time. Some follicles will enter the resting phase. During this phase, some patients worry that their hair isn’t growing or looking different. Rest assured that this is normal. Continue to take care of your hair and the transplanted area as normal.

Three months following hair transplant

The donor area enters the growth phase about 12 weeks after transplantation. At this stage, you shouldn’t experience any numbness or recovery symptoms from the initial stages. The hairs may initially grow in fine. Continue to take care of your hair as you normally would.

Five months following hair transplant

By the fifth month, many patients notice continued growth and may experience a slight change in texture. Grooming becomes much easier and the transplanted hair blends in seamlessly. Dr. Sarti will continue to schedule follow-up appointments with you to check the growth of your hair and success of the transplant.

Dr. Sarti advocates any of his patients to come in any time after 4 months post procedure to take before and after pictures to track their progress.

One year out

By the one year mark, most patients are highly satisfied with their decision to undergo hair transplantation. The transplanted hair is typically full and hair is restored. At this point the hair restoration is noticeable and significant. Some patients find that they still have a slight difference in texture in the transplanted area. However, most patients will find that the texture of their hair has returned to normal.

A hair transplant is the only way to achieve lasting hair regrowth in areas affected by hair loss. Hair loss can make men look and feel older and impact their personal and professional lives.
